About Comedones
- What are those small bumps on my forehead
and chin, but you know they aren't pimples.
Well, Comedones are the skin-coloured, small bumps (papules)
frequently found on the forehead and chin of those with acne.
* Open comedones
are blackheads; black because of surface pigment (melanin) rather than
dirt
* Closed
comedones are whiteheads; the follicle is completely blocked
Comedones form
because plugs of sebum and keratin (old skin cells) block the skin
pores (follicles). They are excess fats and wastes that are trapped in
a hair follicle and so they clog up the pore.
Comedonal acne may
be aggravated by:
* Hormonal
factors
* Humid weather
* Oily products
such as pomades, sunscreens and petroleum-based moisturisers or
cosmetics.
So how do you go
about managing Comedonal acne:
* Choose
oil-free cosmetics and wash twice daily with a mild soap and water.
* Use products
which are non-comedogenic.
* Use Facial
exfoliators to remove dead skin cells which are blocking your pores.
But brutally
scrubbing your face with soaps and chemicals too frequently may
actually create milia. Milia, are little
balls of protein beneath the skin that do not have a pore, or hole in
the skin through which to escape. To avoid this,
remember that gentle exfoliation helps prevent excess dead skin cell
build-up that could clog your pores and cause whiteheads, not milia.

About Sebum
- Why do we get acne or pimples (a.k.a
inflammatory acne) .
Well, the oil on
the surface of skin is a complex mixture of sebum, lipids (from the
surface skin cells), sweat and environmental material.
Sebum is produced by
sebaceous glands. These are found over most of the body, although
there are few on the hands or feet and none on the palms and soles.
Sebaceous glands on the mid-back, forehead and chin are larger and
more numerous than elsewhere (up to 400-900 glands per square
centimeter). They are also numerous in the ear canal and around the
genitals.
Sebum varies with
age and hormonal changes :
* Sebum
production increases at puberty
* During
Pregnancy
* Week
before their menstrual period
* Stress
* Adult
males produce slightly more sebum than adult females
* Sebum
production declines with age, particularly after menopause in females
Most sebaceous
glands open out into the hair follicle. Some free sebaceous glands
open directly onto the skin surface. The composition of oils on the
skin surface varies with age. Excessive sebum production is known as
seborrhea.
Sebum has the
following functions:
* It
reduces water loss from the skin surface
* It
protects the skin from infection by bacteria and fungi
* It
contributes to body odour
So to summarize ,
90% of people with pimples or acne have oily skin. Excess sebum
production causes oily skin, and hence the skin is susceptible to the
bacteria in the air, which ever bacteria enters is the type of acne
you will get, pimples are known as inflammatory acne. So if you get a
product which keeps your sebum production under control, you will not
get oily skin, hence not susceptible to bacteria in the air, hence
your pimples will be controlled.
